What makes Behold different from just searching by using the license filter on Flickr itself is that Behold searches not just by image tag but also by the quality of the content of the images. When it works correctly if you used Behold to search for images of “buildings in New York City” you would not only be searching the tags people assigned to their images, but you would also be searching the actual content of the images.

When students create multimedia projects in my classroom, I require them to use either Creative Commons or Public Domain images if they don’t create their own images. I do this to teach and reinforce the point that they cannot just grab and re-use images without regard for Copyright. Behold could help my students find quality images that meet my Creative Commons requirement.”

“Spent is an online game designed to teach players about the challenges of living on minimum wage (or slightly higher) employment. Players begin by selecting a job which will provide the wages they have to survive on for a month. Then throughout the game players are confronted with challenges that they have to handle by making an “either or” choice. After each choice the player’s account balance is adjusted. In addition to the change in the player’s balance sheet, each choice is followed by an explanation of consequence of the choice made.

Applications for Education When I saw Spent it reminded me of a simulation activity called Life on Minimum Wage that I developed and have used for a couple of years now. Both activities are useful for teaching students about the difficult decisions that some people have to make just to take care of the basic necessities.”

The games come from a variety of sources including some from textbook publishers like Harcourt.

When you choose a grade level you are presented with a variety of games tailored to that grade level, and each game is accompanied by a description of the game and the concepts it explores.

Beyond games, Game Classroom also offers a section they call “homework help.” In this section students, parents, and teachers can choose a common concept explored in that grade level such as “Days of the Week” for Kindergarten and get access to sample problems, games that address that area, learning tips, and links to other online resources.

Game Classroom is a great site, with loads of content for Grades K – 6. Best of all, its free!

Shout out to FreeTech4Teachers.com for finding this great resource.

NOVA, Frontline, and American Experience are three of PBS’ hallmark series. Quite a bit of the content from those three programs is available online on the PBS website as well as on Snag Films. Teachers’ Domain is another place to find great video content from PBS. But the real purpose of Teachers’ Domain is to provide lesson plans and activities to match the media content from PBS and their content partners.

Teachers’ Domain offers lesson plans and activities for K-12 divided into five content categories. To help you narrow your search for lessons, the five categories, arts, language arts, science, mathematics, and social studies are divided into subcategories.”

To play Ghost Blasters select a multiple of which each "bad" ghost will have a value that is a multiple of that which you chose. Students then use their mouse to blast every "bad" ghost. For example, if I select "5" at the beginning then all bad ghosts will display a multiple of 5. I then have to blast all of the bad ghosts to gain points, but if I blast a "good" ghost (a ghost that does not have a multiple of 5) I lose points.
