<p>&#8220;The eruption of the volcano in Iceland may present teachers with an opportunity to combine lessons in science and current events. The list below contains five resources for learning about volcanoes in general. If you&#8217;re looking for links specifically about the volcano in Iceland, Larry Ferlazzo has a good list going.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/kilimanjaro/">Volcano Above the Clouds</a> is a NOVA program that chronicles an ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro by a group of climbers and scientists. In addition to the video, Volcano Above the Clouds offers a large collection of materials and teaching guides for learning about volcanoes, glaciers, and climate change with Mount Kilimanjaro at the center of each lesson. As Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the Seven Summits of the world, NOVA provides a slideshow of the Seven Summits which puts Kilimanjaro into perspective relative to those other summits.</p>
<p><a href="http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/natural-disasters/forces-of-nature.html">Forces of Nature</a> is a feature of National Geographic&#8217;s website. There are four sections to the Forces of Nature. The sections focus on tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, and earthquakes. There are six parts to each section. In the last part of each section students can create their own natural disaster using the knowledge they&#8217;ve gained from the previous five parts about how a natural disaster is formed. The Forces of Nature also offers photo galleries and interactive maps about tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, and earthquakes.</p>
<p>The BBC has a series of <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7533964.stm">interactive guides</a> that explain how natural disasters are caused. Included in this series is a twelve part animated explanation of volcanic eruptions. The series also includes explanations of hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis.</p>
<p>National Geographic&#8217;s film <a href="http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/volcano_natures_inferno/">Volcano: Nature&#8217;s Inferno</a> follows scientists as they explain what causes volcanoes to erupt and as the scientists try to predict when volcanoes will erupt. Watch the film for free on Snag Films.</p>
<p>The PBS Series <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wnet/savageearth/index.html">Savage Earth</a> offers animations how volcanic eruptions happen. The series also contains animations that explain earthquakes and tsunamis.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google has introduced a new way of searching news stories that provides a timeline of the story against the articles that have been posted around the web called <a href="http://livingstories.googlelabs.com/">Google Living Stories</a>. Right now its limited to New York Times and Washington Post stories, but that will grow over time. Really looks to be an exceptional way of researching the background a current news story.</p>

The Nobel Foundation has created a Nobel Peace Prize fact sheet to help visitors learn more about the history of the prize and to address some frequently asked questions. The Nobel Peace Prize website also offers videos of lectures given by past recipients of the prize.</p>
<p>The Nobel Foundation has an educational games site designed to help students learn about the work of past Nobel Prize recipients from a variety of fields. For example, there is a game for learning about Pavlov&#8217;s dogs.&#8221;</p>

The <a href="http://newstimeline.googlelabs.com/">Google News Timeline</a> could become a fantastic resource for anyone that teaches current events and or 20th &#8211; 21st Century history. The <a href="http://newstimeline.googlelabs.com/">Google News Timeline</a>allows you to search for news stories by event, a person&#8217;s name, or by date. In the example below I searched for &#8220;John F. Kennedy, 11/22/63.&#8221;</p>

<p>Search results include links to stories, images, and videos. In some cases your search will yield results from archived magazines and newspapers. In my testing of the service, I found that searches for more recent events yielded more results than searches for older events.</p>
<p>As a research tool, the best feature of the <a href="http://newstimeline.googlelabs.com/">Google News Timeline</a> is the ease with which you can find related results by dragging the timeline forward or backward with your mouse.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://newstimeline.googlelabs.com/">Google News Timeline</a> is still in development in the Google Lab, but what they&#8217;ve made available thus far is a very promising tool for history teachers and students.</p>
<p><span><strong>Applications for Education<br />
</strong><span>The <a href="http://googlenewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/introducing-google-news-timeline.html">Google News Timeline</a> could be a very useful research tool for history and current events students. Through the use of the timeline, students will be able to choose an event then read about the lead-up and aftermath of that event. For example, if a student picked &#8220;fall of the Berlin wall&#8221; they could use the <a href="http://googlenewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/introducing-google-news-timeline.html">Google News Timeline</a> to read news accounts of the days prior to the fall of the wall and the days following the fall. The timeline will also display links to current writing on the student&#8217;s chosen topic.&#8221;</span></span></div>
