This website has virtual manipulatives for the following concepts: number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement and data & analysis.  Once you select a concept to work on, a student activity pops up.  At the top of the student activity page you will find a parent/teacher button which provides lesson plans for each activity, a standards button which ties the activity to an NTCM standard, and then an instruction button for the activity.  Each math strand has a wide range of activities to complete.  There are activities that can be used for review, reinforcement and challenge, great for differentiation

Great Find!

Math

www.mathsurf.com/parent/

Pearson Education, Inc. and Scotts Foresman

It is a great place to find resources for teachers and families.  There is a section called “Reading for Math” that has stories and pictures the students can read and there are discussion questions throughout the story.  Each story addresses a certain math concept.

This would be great for a student to do at home with an adult.  It can be done in the classroom but it would need teacher directions.

This site helps students practice their math skills interactively.  The game room has exciting games at various levels.  Some of the games need a lot of instruction and help in the beginning.  There are flashcards and a math word find puzzle.  There is also a worksheets section that you can print from as well as a Homework Helper section.

The University of York for the Department for Education and Skills

This site has a lot of high level thinking activites, newsletters and links.  It is worth time looking into each section because I found something for second graders each time I clicked a button.  In the game section there are games that might require some instruction but that second graders can then complete on their own and benefit from.  This website is very well done and would be great to meet the different needs in the classroom.

In the game section under Math Circus I found some games I though my second graders would really like.  One in particular is called Pole Climber and it helps students practice addition and subtraction problems.  The student can adjust the difficulty level on this particular game as well.
